Perhaps a loved one is dealing with alcohol abuse or drug dependence. You may even believe that a family member in your home is suffering from these issues. But, maybe you’re not exactly sure.

Many individuals worry that their family members are suffering from the effects of alcoholism or drug abuse. It can be difficult to know exactly what a friend or family member is going through, especially if substance abuse is involved.

When it comes to addiction, many people are aware of the “obvious” signs. In other words, if a loved one has multiple needles or bottles of pills or seems to drink too much and too often, it is likely that a substance use disorder is present. In some cases, people will show physical signs of substance abuse. You may see burn marks on their skin, enlarged pupils, dilated pupils, or bloodshot eyes. These are all physical changes that may be present if a person is suffering from addiction.
However, many of the signs of addiction are not so easy to identify. Some are more subtle and develop more slowly. So, it’s important to be aware of these signs if you think someone who lives with you is dealing with addiction.
