The rate of alcohol and drug abuse is greater in blue-collar jobbers. The reason behind this is, blue-collar jobs are more physically demanding involves intense manual labor that leads to more work-related injuries.
Due to this reason, more blue-collar workers turn to drugs and alcohol to cope up with the stress and the pain.
In many cases, dependency on pain medication, initially prescribed by the doctors, develops. The worst outcome of this dependency is an increased number of accidents, health issues and loss of a job.
Various surveys and research have been conducted to prepare the report comparing substance abuse patterns among various industrial sectors. The findings of the report about Blue-collar workers include the following statistics:
1) 17.5% of workers are reported to be using alcohol often and heavily.
2) A substantial percentage of workers were reported on opioid use disorder
3) Every one worker out of 8 was reported as drug or alcohol dependent
4) 1 out of 20 workers report illicit drug usage
Among the blue-collar jobbers, the usage of illicit drugs and alcohol is a very prominent problem. And the foodservice industry has been affected the most by substance abuse and addiction which can be attributed to the following factors:
Sometimes separation from the loved one to earn money also draws blue-collar workers towards drug abuse.
Job loss and the period of unemployment are very crucial in pulling blue-collar workers towards drug or drinking abuse as they go through financial difficulties, depression, low self-worth, etc.
Sometimes due to physical fatigue workers tend to turn towards prescribed opioids to find solace, comfort and pain relief.
Awareness of the substance abuse problem is the most reachable and sustainable method of helping blue-collar workers overcomes the addiction of drinks or drugs.
Some workplace management has developed strategies that help blue-collar jobs to prevent drug abuse. Medical and psychological assistance is provided for those at the workplace who need it.

EAP also works towards providing on-the-spot counseling to drug or mental health-related incidents to ensure that the survivor can deal with the stress healthily and does not fall back to drugs or alcohol.
EAP aims at providing educational outreach to employees and the management at the lunch and learns event. Invite speakers who discuss the details to office staff regarding the warning signs of mental health stress, addiction and work alcoholism.
EAP counselor also works towards eliminating the workplace stigma that surrounds mental health and drug abuse which can make the employee feel isolated. EAP ensures that employers offer a flexible, gradual process of returning to the office such as reducing hours of working or making arrangements for work from home.
